Event Description:
On Wednesday, October 16, and Thursday, October 17, 2024, the second General Assembly of the United States Section of the Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, hosted at Carnegie Mellon University in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh. The 1.5-day conference includes plenaries, panels, and working sessions in the Cohon University Center at Carnegie Mellon (in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood.)

City of Asylum is hosting a social event in their Alphabet City headquarters in Pittsburgh’s historic Mexican War Streets neighborhood on the North Side. City of Asylum Pittsburgh provides sanctuary to endangered writers and artists, so they can continue to create in a space where their voices are not silenced. They also offer a broad range of free literary, arts, and humanities programs in a community setting to build social equity through cultural exchange.
Enjoy hors d'oeuvres, browsing the independent bookstore specializing in international literature and works in translation, and a tour of the garden and “house publication” writer residences (within walking distance of Alphabet City.) A cash bar will be available.

The University of Pittsburgh’s Global Studies Center is hosting an event in the historic Alumni Hall, a short walk or ride away from the CMU campus. Pitt’s Global Studies Center coordinates the Pittsburgh Network for Threatened Scholars (PiNTS), which convenes diverse local and national partner organizations to bring threatened scholars, artists, and practitioners to the university and to Pittsburgh.
The social includes hors d'oeuvres and tours of Pitt’s Nationality Rooms in the historic Cathedral of Learning. Pitt’s 31 Nationality Rooms were designed to represent and celebrate the cultures of various ethnic groups that settled in the Pittsburgh region and are a highlight of any Pittsburgh visit.

CMU has arranged room blocks at discounted rates at nearby hotels. Participants can take advantage of discounted rates until the dates listed below; after that, the full price will apply. The hotels are about one mile from CMU.Transportation
Pittsburgh International Airport
There are a variety of transport options available at the airport:
It takes approximately 30 minutes by car to get from the airport to the conference location and hotels, while public transportation takes about one hour.
Getting around Pittsburgh
Ride sharing and public transportation are convenient ways to get around Pittsburgh. Ridesharing or public transit between the conference hotels and the CMU campus take about 10 minutes. Walking (approximately one mile) takes between 20 and 30 minutes.
Downtown Pittsburgh is a 15 minute drive from the Oakland neighborhood.
Directions to City of Asylum can be found on their website. It’s between 20 and 40 minutes by car or bus from CMU and the conference hotels.
Parking
Participants can arrange for a pre-paid parking pass in Carnegie Mellon’s East Campus Garage by signing up for parking during the conference registration period. The Parking fee is $25.52 per car, per day.
Parking registration closes on Friday, September 20, 2024 at 11:59pm. Parking is non-refundable.
